Tropical Fish Can Live For Months Out Of Water

GUATEMALA CITY - A tropical fish that lives in mangrove swamps across the Americas can survive out of water for months at a time, similar to how animals adapted to land millions of years ago, a new study shows. The Mangrove Rivulus, a type of small tropical killifish, seeks refuge in shallow pools of water in crab burrows, coconut shells or even old beer cans in the tropical mangrove swamps of Belize, Brazil and the United States. New, Practical, Affordable Water Filter

People caught in a disaster-devastated area always need clean water. By clean we mean without bacteria--the little unseen critters that make people sick with diseases like Cholera. Without it, they cannot maintain their health and strength and they cannot begin recovery. Click here for more on this new water filter- http://www.monolithic.com/edcircle/waterfilter/ . Easter Island

Easter Island has long been the subject of curiosity and speculation. How and why did its inhabitants carve and transport the massive statues which surround the island? What remains of this culture today, and what lessons can we learn from their legacy? Beyond tha Age of Petroleum

This past May, in an unheralded and almost unnoticed move, the Energy Department signaled a fundamental, near epochal shift in US and indeed world history: we are nearing the end of the Petroleum Age and have entered the Age of Insufficiency. The department stopped talking about "oil" in its projections of future petroleum availability and began speaking of "liquids." The global output of "liquids," the department indicated, would rise from 84 million barrels of oil equivalent (mboe) per day in 2005 to a projected 117.7 mboe in 2030--barely enough to satisfy anticipated world demand of 117.6 mboe. Aside from suggesting the degree to which oil companies have ceased being mere suppliers of petroleum and are now purveyors of a wide variety of liquid products--including synthetic fuels derived from natural gas, corn, coal and other substances--this change hints at something more fundamental: we have entered a new era of intensified energy competition and growing reliance on the use of force to protect overseas sources of petroleum. Box Containing Bones of James, Brother of Jesus-Fake

JERUSALEM -- A stone box touted as the oldest archaeological evidence of Jesus is, in fact, a well-crafted fake, Israeli archaeological experts say.

The box, an object known as an ossuary, was said to have contained the bones of Jesus' brother James.

Carved on one side is an inscription in the ancient language of Aramaic bearing the legend: "James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus."

Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico

In 1971, I visited 'Palenque' in Mexico. It was enchanting, beautiful, strange. Click here to see great photos of 'Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico' , Mayan Civialization Ruins. Cool.

"Palenque sits like a jewel against the Chiapas Mountains overlooking the broad coastal plain that came to be known as Nonowal and Xicalanco to later peoples in Mesoamerica. The ancient Palenque people constructed their palaces, temples, and houses on natural and manufactured terraces that rise up the northern side of the first ridge of these forest-covered limestone mountains. They called their city Lakam Ha, "Big Water," and their kingdom Bak, "Bone." Quoted from this site---http://www.mayaruins.com/palenque.html

Lyrics To 'Cane Train' by Jon Baroni

Bartlett talked to Jon Baroni last night, about upcoming music gigs in the Yelm area. Baroni is a very talented musician and song writer, along with T. Hall. I'm looking forward to any and all music that Bartlett and he do together.

I found the lyrics to one of Jon's songs--'Cane Train'. . Click here for the info http://biofractalevolution.com/writings/CaneTrain.pdf. I think Baroni and Bartlett recorded 'Cane Train' about 3 years ago, with several other fine musicians.

'Wake Up Calls' a CD by Jon Baroni and Ted Hall is available at http://www.biofractalevolution.com/ . Bartlett played on several of the tunes. Check it out.

"Over the past few years, I've worked with Boston-born dynamic rocker Jon Baroni on the writing and development of a new paradigm "environmental" album designed to lend strength to the growing consensus that, in John Kennedy's phrasing, "Man must put an end to war, or war will put an end to man."quoted from Ted Hall, at http://www.biofractalevolution.com/

"This awesome picture was taken in Bitterroot National Forest in Montana on August 6, 2000. The photographer, John McColgan, is a fire behavior analyst from Fairbanks, Alaska. He took the picture with a digital camera. Because he was working at the time he took the picture he cannot profit from it; however, we feel the picture is a once-in-a-lifetime shot and should be shared."

Pray For A Storm In Georgia

Georgia's on my mind. Atlanta, Georgia. It's a city in trouble in a state in trouble in a region in trouble. Water trouble. Trouble big enough that the state government's moving fast. Just this week, backed up by a choir singing "Amazing Grace," accompanied by three protestant ministers, and 20 demonstrators from the Atlanta Freethought Society, Georgia's Baptist Governor Sonny Perdue led a crowd of hundreds in prayers for rain. "We've come together here," he said, "simply for one reason and one reason only: To very reverently and respectfully pray up a storm." It seems, however, that the Almighty -- He "who can and will make a difference" -- was otherwise occupied and the regional drought continued to threaten Atlanta, a metropolis of 5 million people (and growing fast), with the possibility that it might run out of water in as little as 80 days or as much as a year, if the rains don't come. Martin's Helping Gamers Out

We are now caught up with the fan-created translations of GURPS Lite . . . except for two. And the Spanish one is out of our hands at the moment, but will soon be in your hands; layout is done and the translator is putting some final tweaks on it.That leaves Chinese. Thanks to the efforts of Martin Barela, we have a text file for Lite in Simplified Chinese. But we can't lay it out. We now know that it's simply impossible to handle a Chinese-character file with an English edition of Quark, and probably any other layout program. (Perhaps we should have known that a year ago, but the problem had never arisen here before . . .)So at this point, all we can do is ask: Is there anyone out there who possesses a layout program that will work with Chinese, who will volunteer to take Martin's text and format it as a usable PDF to distribute with the other versions of GURPS Lite?If so, please drop me a line at sj@sjgames.com. Thanks! -- Steve Jackson
